You Can’t Make Me Behoove
By Glenn Dromgoole
As far as I know, I’ve never behooved.
Even when I used to write newspaper editorials, which were notorious for behooving, I don’t think I ever behooved.
When an editorial writer wanted to avoid taking a strong stand on an issue, he could always say that it behooves us to study it further or it behooves Congress to blah, blah, blah.
One editorial writer told me that he behooved once and it tasted so bad that he spit it out and resolved never to behoove again.
Other than editorial writers, have you ever met anyone who behooves?
Can you envision your mother saying, “It behooves you to eat your peas”? No, she would be much more direct. “If you don’t eat your peas, you can’t have any ice cream.”
You don’t see as many newspaper editorials these days because, sadly, there are fewer newspapers and even fewer editorial pages. So there’s not as much behooving as there used to be.
Actually, I kind of miss it.
