Again and again

By Glenn Dromgoole

When my daughters were small and I would read them a bedtime story or sing them a bedtime song, invariably their response would be: Read it again. Or sing it again. And, of course, I would. Sometimes again and again.

Again and again. We find a lot of those in our lives. It’s tax time again. It’s election day again. It’s the birthday we stopped counting, again. The lawn needs mowing or the clothes need washing or the bed needs making, again. Again and again.

I got to thinking about that word “again” when our church, like most churches, went through its fall stewardship campaign.

It’s already stewardship Sunday again? Every year, again and again. I’m sure pastors don’t look forward to it any more than their parishioners do. Probably less.

I remember one year my dad, as a pastor, told the church members not to turn in a pledge card that year. Just fill it out and put it in their wallet or purse and look at it from time to time – again and again – and be reminded of their commitment. I assume it worked – the church didn’t close.

Appropriately, the next thing on the church calendar, after stewardship Sunday, is Thanksgiving when we are encouraged to be thankful for the many blessings we continue receiving.

Again and again.
