Would You Rather Be Rich or Famous?

By Glenn Dromgoole

Would you rather be rich or famous? Or both? Or neither?

As one who is neither, let me offer a couple of thoughts on the question.

Yes, I have to say, I would like to be rich.

Yes, sometimes I think, I would like to be famous.

Then I look at the news and see all these people who are both rich and famous, and I wonder: is that how I would want to live?

Could my wife and I go out for, say, a chicken-fried steak or a hamburger without drawing a crowd of people who want to take a selfie with us or have me sign an autograph?

If I had more money than I could possibly spend, would I appreciate it and do something worthwhile with it, or just blow through it on trivialities and unwise investments?

And then I start counting, not what I don’t have, but what I do have – a loving wife, good friends, a standing in the community, a nice home, a little money in the bank – and it strikes me.

I am as rich and famous as I want, or need, to be.

How about you?
