Retirement Poem for Stan Allcorn

Editor’s Note: This poem by Pioneer Drive Baptist Church member Carolyn Newman was read during the Aug 30 retirement party for longtime church pastor Stan Allcorn.

R-E- T-I-R-E M-E-N- T,
STAN ALLCORN IS RETIRING FROM PDBC.
WE WILL MISS YOUR SERMONS AND WHAT WE’VE OFTEN HEARD,
“WOULD YOU PLEASE STAND FOR THE READING OF GOD’S WORD?”

NO WATERED DOWN SERMONS WITH PATS ON OUR BACKS,
STAN PREACHED THE GOSPEL AND STAN PREACHED THE FACTS.
HUSBAND, FATHER, BROTHER, OUR PASTOR, 22 YEARS,
YOU’VE BEEN THERE FOR US THROUGH LAUGHTER AND THROUGH TEARS.

UPON YOUR RETIREMENT, YOU NEED A GOOD CHAIR.
THE ONE YOU USED TO HAVE SHOWED A LOT OF WEAR
SO YOU TOOK CLAUDIA’S AND LEFT HER HIGH AND DRY
SO CLAUDIA, HERE’S SOME MONEY, A NEW CHAIR YOU CAN BUY!

WHEN YOU RETIRE, THERE’S FIVE FRIDAYS IN A ROW.
THEN ALONG COMES THE WEEKEND, OH THE PLACES YOU CAN GO!
SO WHEN YOU MISS THE MINISTRY AND IF YOU GET THE BLUES
YOU AND YOUR SWEET CLAUDIA CAN UP AND TAKE A CRUISE.

STAN, YOU’VE DEALT WITH BIRDIES WHICH MEANS ONE UNDER PAR,
WE KNOW THAT YOU LOVE GOLF, AND PLAY WHEREVER YOU ARE.
BUT WHAT ABOUT REAL BIRDS? DO THEY MAKE YOUR HEART SING?
LET’S REFLECT ON THE HUMMINGBIRD WITH IT’S STRINGS,— I MEAN WINGS.

YOU STRUCK A CHORD WITH US SO NOW IT’S TIME TO PLAY
HERE’S A HUMMINGBIRD FEEDER, WATCH THOSE “BIRDIES” EVERY DAY.
THEN WE LOOKED ALL AROUND, WE LOOKED NEAR AND FAR
THINKING ABOUT BIRDS, FOUND A GIBSON HUMMINGBIRD GUITAR.

WE ALL COUNT OUR BLESSINGS THAT GOD SENT YOU OUR WAY
BUT NOW THOSE GRANDCHILDREN ARE READY FOR YA’LL TO PLAY.
THERE IS SO MUCH MORE THAT WE COULD HAVE SAID,
BUT ACTUALLY, IT’S NOT TIME TO RE-TIRE, IT’S TIME TO RE-TREAD!
WITH LOVE FROM THE PIONEER DRIVE BAPTIST CHURCH CONGREGATION
