As soon as word spread that Virginia Connally, Abilene’s first female physician, had died March 31, messages of condolence and recollections of a remarkable life started to pour in.

Many came from people with ties to the Baptist church, both locally and in larger circles.

Connally, 106, came to Abilene to enroll at then-Simmons University in 1930. She joined First Baptist Church not long after and served the church locally, nationally and internationally her entire life.

Several Baptist leaders will speak at Connally’s memorial service, which will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 13, at First Baptist Church.
