For the 30th year, Howard Payne University will host a summer music camp sponsored by the Texas Southern Gospel School of Music.

The camp will be held June 15-26, with registration scheduled for 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 14, in the Mabee Student Center. Early registration deadlines have passed. The camp is for ages 7 and up. Seven-year-olds are required to have an adult accompany them. A brochure touts the value of Southern Gospel music:

“The study of Gospel music instills confidence, creativity, competence, and love for God. Students will find their attendance a rewarding experience.”

Most people attending the camp will stay in HPU campus dorms, but commuters are also welcomed. Group classes include music theory, advanced music theory, sight reading, and ear training. Private lessons, which cost extra, include voice, piano, guitar, and violin. Group singing will be held in the mornings and evenings.

The public is invited to the free closing concert at 7 p.m. Friday, June 26, in the L.J. Mims Auditorium, across the street from the Davidson Music Complex, where classes will be held.
