Celebration of Life to Honor Dr. Robert Barnes
“The spirit of Robert Barnes transitioned into eternity on July 6, 2021.”
Those simple words mark the beginning of Dr. Barnes’ obituary and the end of his earthly life. Dr. Barnes and his wife, Dorothy, both taught at Hardin-Simmons University. In her 32 years and his 40 years on the HSU faculty, more than 600 of their graduate students completed master’s degrees in Counseling and Human Development, and more than 50 subsequently earned doctoral degrees. During that time, Dr. Barnes was awarded the A.B. Shelton Endowed Chair (professorship) at HSU and the Distinguished Alumnus award from his high school alma mater in Michigan.

Dr. Barnes also was known for his ties to the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy Toronto. He served as president of the institute’s International Board of Directors and twice represented Hardin-Simmons University and the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy as the pulpit guest of the late Dr. Robert Schuller in the Crystal Cathedral in California.
