Large Print Books

By Glenn Dromgoole

I am virtually blind in my left eye (from shingles) and am being treated for macular degeneration in my right eye — but I’m reading more than ever.

I am thankful for large print books, and I am especially thankful for the great selection of large print novels at the Abilene Public Library.

Like many folks, as I’ve gotten older I’ve found the print in books and magazines to have gotten smaller. Well, so it seems anyway.

One way to combat that is to read everything on the computer where you can increase the type size as much as you want, or need, to.

But I like sitting in my recliner with a book or propped up in bed before turning out the light. So, in recent months, I’ve found my way to the extensive large print fiction section of the APL main library.

The library is a wonderful community resource, and it’s about to be even better. The main library soon will move to its spacious new digs at Abilene Heritage Square. It’s set to open on Saturday, May 16. (The opening originally was announced for Monday, May 18, but was moved up to better accommodate families.)

I plan to be there. You can probably find me in the large print section. Hopefully, with the new space, the library will be able to expand its large-print non-fiction section soon.

Meanwhile, if you don’t have a library card, it’s the best bargain in town.

Free.
