Interfaith Council Co-Hosting ‘Science, Religion, Awe’ Presentations

By Loretta Fulton

The Abilene Interfaith Council is co-hosting two sessions with science ambassador and author JD Stillwater on Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 20 and 21.

A graduate of Cornell University, Stillwater “moves and inspires thousands of people all over North America and the globe with science-centered messages of awe and deep kinship,” according to his bio.

On Wednesday, Jan. 21, Stillwater will be at the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest at 6 p.m. for a potluck meal featuring foods from various cultures and a talk titled, “Awe, Science, Religion, and Eudaemonia.” The word “eudaemonia” is Greek for well-being or purpose. Both the meal and the presentation will be in the church’s Gerhart Hall. A parking lot is located on South 7th Street. The following is from Stillwater’s website, https://www.jdstillwater.earth/:
“Recent research into the experience of awe reveals that awe makes us feel small but also deeply connected. The experience of awe is something all the world’s religions have in common. Awe makes us better people, with greater life happiness, generosity, and purpose (eudaemonia).”

Stillwater will speak at McMurry at noon Jan. 20 in the Finch-Gray Science Building, Room S104. His talk, titled “One Song: The Science of Oneness,” will focus on the “all is one” concept of existence. An Interfaith Council flier reads as follows:

“Join us at McMurry University where we’ll take a tour of scientific discoveries that reveal how we are all interconnected to each other and nature.”
