Wisdom of the Aged
By Glenn Dromgoole
Johnnie Lou Avery Boyd, beloved longtime Abilenian who now lives in Midland, recently sent me a copy of her latest book, Wisdom of the Aged. And, indeed, the 185 pages (8 ½ by 11 in an easy-to-read typeface) are packed with practical and insightful wisdom.
Johnnie Lou writes: “I wish a wise elder had sat me down when I was about twelve and said, ‘I want to tell you some things that may help you in life.’ … Therefore, I find it compelling to share some of the important lessons learned through my long life.”
Johnnie Lou, who is 88 years young, arranges her advice alphabetically by subject, starting with Adversity and ending with Zeal. Along the way, she offers thoughts regarding Character, Gratitude, Kindness, Purpose, Values and Work, to name a few.

With each category, she presents a brief introduction to the topic, provides several points of advice, expands on them a little, and closes with some appropriate quotes from other notable people.
Take, for example, the chapter on Merriment, which if you know Johnnie Lou then you know she is certainly an expert on that topic. Here are some of her points to ponder:
* Our life changes when we choose between joy and despair.
* A sense of humor makes one fully human.
* Joy is an attitude.
* Surround yourself with joyful people.
* Cultivate and encourage a spirit of fun and laughter.
* Joyful people stay riveted to the present.
And she quotes actress Ethel Barrymore saying, “You grow up the day you have your first laugh at yourself.”
