“When Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale walks onto the Hardin-Simmons University campus this fall, he’ll bring more than his famously fast-paced energy and business savvy. He’ll bring a message rooted in grit, generosity, and purpose—the kind of leadership that doesn’t just build businesses but transforms communities.
McIngvale, the renowned Houston entrepreneur and founder of Gallery Furniture, will headline the fall 2025 Fletcher Lecture Series at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, in the Houston-Lantrip Center, 2241 Pine St. Known for his bold marketing, steadfast faith, and servant leadership—including turning his stores into shelters during Houston’s worst storms—McIngvale exemplifies the kind of impact-driven leadership the series aims to spotlight.

Hosted in partnership with the Abilene Chamber of Commerce, the Fletcher Lecture Series brings nationally respected voices to West Texas to explore the intersections of business, science, faith, and public life. Named in honor of former HSU President Jesse C. Fletcher, the series reflects his legacy of academic excellence, Christian leadership, and civic responsibility.
“This event is a powerful intersection of purpose, values, and leadership,” said HSU President Eric Bruntmyer. “By inviting leaders like Mattress Mack, we’re creating opportunities for our students and our region to think deeply about how faith and business can transform communities.”
McIngvale’s story is one of resilience. With just $5,000 and a dream, he built a furniture empire in Houston—and when disaster struck, he repeatedly answered the call. His brand became a beacon of hope and humanity, offering not just products but protection, community, and care.”
