Volunteers Needed for Operation Blue Jeans

By Loretta Fulton

It’s only mid-summer, but school bells will ringing before you know it.

As a reminder, Christian Service Center will be hosting its annual Operation Blue Jeans, beginning July 8. The program outfits pre-K through middle school students with new clothes and shoes.

Volunteers are needed to fill times slots beginning Tuesday, July 8. The schedule is as follows:

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1 to 5 p.m., from July 8 through Aug. 7.
  • Saturdays, 9 a.m. to noon, July 12 and Aug. 2 and 9.

Volunteers are needed to assist with check-ins and clothing and shoe fittings. Bilingual volunteers are especially needed.

Christian Service Center is located at 3185 N. 10th St. If you can help, email Meredith Horn, objprogram@cscabilene.org or call 325-268-6923.

Operation Blue Jeans started in 1967 and provides not only new clothes but a new outlook for starting school.

“Each outfit is a fresh start, reminding kids that they matter and belong,” a promotional flier says.

Children from low income families enrolled in AISD pre-K, Headstart, elementary schools and middle schools are eligible. Three children from one family will be served per day. The following must be provided:

  • Social Security card for each child and the parent or guardian.
  • ID for the parent or legal guardian
  • Amounts of monthly income and food assistance
  • One can of food per child to help fill the Christian Service Center pantry

What a wonderful ministry! I can’t help but think of all the empty seats in classrooms where children lost in the flood should be. These losses emphasize our need to appreciate each other and every day.
