Abilenians Celebrate ‘Independence’ and ‘Dependence’

By Loretta Fulton

It may cause a double-take, but two events are scheduled for July 3 and 4 which sound like opposites.

Coming up Thursday, July 3, is “Dependence Day,” sponsored by West Texans for Life. And, of course, Friday, July 4, is “Independence Day,” which celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

The “Dependence Day” celebration, which acknowledges a dependence on God, will be held 3-9 p.m. Thursday at Festival Gardens, across from the zoo. The free event will feature hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, drinks, and ice cream. Also, free coupons will be distributed by Cici’s Pizza.

The family-friendly event also will feature frisbees, beach balls, stuffed animals, and games for children. For more information, contact Jim Sulliman at 692-4976. Bring a lawn chair.

A longstanding community event is scheduled for Friday, July 4, when the Abilene Community Band will present its Fourth of July concert. The free concert will begin at 7 p.m. on the east lawn of the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest, 602 Meander St. Bring a lawn chair or blankets, along with snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. Popcorn will be provided. The concert was featured in the church’s June newsletter:

“July 4th is a time to be outdoors with all its sounds and smells. July 4th is also a time to meet those neighbors who live just down the street, but because of our busy lives, we never have time to stop and say ‘hello.’”
