Meet Terrence Penns
By Loretta Fulton
The observance of Black History Month will have special meaning for Terrence Penns this year.
Each February is set aside to emphasize the contributions of Black Americans to the nation’s history. Abilene is home to Curtis House Cultural Center, 630 Washington St., which houses local Black history. It was founded and overseen for many years by Andrew Penns, pastor of Valley View Missionary Baptist Church.
Now his son, Terrance, is stepping in as director, just in time for an influx of guests during Black History Month. He–and his father–believe Terrence is up to the task.
“I’ve always been one to step out on faith,” Terrence said. “So I am optimistic about where The Curtis House Cultural Center will continue going and can become.”

Q Taking over the curator position from your dad is quite a responsibility. What was your reaction when he proposed the idea?
A I was surprised but also have been doing alot behind the scenes. Just trying to make myself more familiar with the complete history and stories.
Q What will your daily job responsibilities be?
A My main responsibility is to progress the history as well as preserve the culture we have already inhabited. I will still organize events but be able to interact more with the community as I wont be so much behind the scenes anymore.
Q Black History Month is always a busy time at the cultural center. How do groups sign up for a tour?
A Groups can reach out through our Instagram page or send a message like always. We are revamping some things within the organization to make this process smoother.
Q What are your regular operating hours? Can individuals come at any time you’re open?
A During February we are looking at 10-1 then 3-5 M-F. Wednesdays we are out planning and engaging with the community & then only 10-1 on Friday..for right now.
Q What part of your new job excites you the most?
A I think the opportunity to carry a legacy, but also highlight the history that has come before us as well as that which we are witnessing now. There are people like myself in this city trying to do some progressive things. And thats cool.
Q Do you plan any changes, either in displays or programming in the near future?
A That’s something we are working on. I do plan the events but always keep the board knowledgeable of what I am doing and planning.
Q Do you have any new acquisitions?
A I have some things in motion! We assisted with the naming of the street after Mrs. Abor as well as The Woodson Legacy committee where we will take part in the refurbishing and development of the Woodson Head Start location into a community headquarters for neighborhood enrichment and job opportunities.
