Litty Bitty

By Glenn Dromgoole

One of my favorite country songs of all time is “Little Bitty,” a peppy number written by Tom T. Hall and made into a hit by Alan Jackson.

The chorus:

Well, it’s all right to be little bitty
A little hometown or a big old city
Might as well share, might as well smile
Life goes on for a little bitty while.

I think about those lyrics from time to time. One of those times is during the local United Way campaign which relies on small donations from thousands of “little bitty” folks to make its goal and serve the community. And, of course, during an election year when everyone’s “little bitty” vote counts.

The fact is, every day it’s not only all right to be little bitty, it’s important that we recognize the “little bitty” powers we all have.

We have the power to smile.
We have the power to be courteous.
We have the power to give.
We have the power to listen.
We have the power to be civil.
We have the power to care.
We have the power to vote.
We have the power to participate.
We have the power to be kind.

We have the “little bitty” power to make our corner of the world a little better place.
