Megan Schaulis turned her favorite childhood pastime into a grown up venture with the publication of her first book, Protector, based on the biblical story of Esther.
Growing up in Mesa, Arizona, Megan won writing contests in school and aspired to be a children’s book author. Her dad was her first “publisher,” creating a binder for her labeled Megan’s Self-Contained Writing Laboratory.
“I took it on family trips, car rides, everywhere for a summer,” she recalled.

Instead of a children’s book, Protector is aimed at young audiences ages 14 and up. A blurb from WhiteCrown Publishing describes it this way:
“Nanotechnology and royal romance combine with a heartfelt quest to make a difference in this dystopian reimagining of the book of Esther.”
Protector is available at Texas Star Trading Company, 174 Cypress St., and at meganschaulis.com
Megan was well-versed in Bible stories as a youth and has read a lot of books about Esther. All of them had a “beauty pageant” focus, but she had a different idea for a retelling of the story. What if the king were looking for an elite warrior who was trained to lead in battle?
“I wanted to write this tale,” Megan said.
Protector is the first of a two-book set. Book 2, which will debut in April 2025, completes the story. A spinoff based on the book of Nehemiah is scheduled for publication in 2026.
When Protector was released in April, it was a #1 New Release in Teen & Young Adult Christian Science Fiction.

Besides writing books, Megan and her husband, Josh, own Kettle Fire Creative, a branding and web design firm in Abilene. They are active in Victory Church on South Sixth Street, and are the parents of two children, a daughter, 6, and a son, 5 months. Megan also homeschools her daughter and is a member of Big Country Home Educators.
Megan has a journalism degree from Arizona State University and is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers. Her writing background includes brand writing and business copywriting. She is a former English and language arts teacher in public schools.
Even with a full-time career and being a mom, wife, and homeschool teacher, Megan never outgrew her childhood love of writing stories. She doesn’t foresee venturing away from books based on Bible stories that she knows very well.
“I’ve loved the Word since I was very young,” she said.
